Hi, my name is Kyle. I am a senior at Black Hills State University majoring in Speech Communication with a minor in Military Science. Since I became a student here, I have slowly but surely found myself involved more and more with my campus and its organizations and I decided that since I like this place so much, you might too. Basically, that is the purpose of this blog. I am going to tell you all about the fun and interesting things I am doing here and hopefully you might think they sound fun and interesting too.
So, to introduce myself a little more thoroughly, I am a senior and a Speech Communication Major with a minor in Military Science. I am a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard and I am also a Cadet in the ROTC program here. My plan after I graduate is to (insert Forest Gump voice) “Do whatever the Army tells me too, Drill Sergeant.” On graduation day in May, I get a diploma and a Second Lieutenant’s rank all in the same day. It is pretty exciting. I am also involved in Student Organizations here on campus. I am a Yellow Jacket Delegate. The Delegates assist the Office of Admissions with recruiting students for our school. So if you stop by for a tour, you will mostly be guided by one of us, and there is a pretty solid chance that could even be me.
Campus lately has been pretty interesting, as far as the summer goes. We have bikers from the Sturgis Rally staying on our campus, which definitely adds a new sound to the background noise we get to hear as we walk to our cars. It is fun though, and I am a firm believer that different is good. Besides, I will gladly surrender my Black Hills to these motorcyclists for a couple weeks to get so many good concerts just twenty minutes away!
As crazy as it is to hear, the first day of school is only two and a half weeks away. Wow, that seems just around the corner! If you are going to apply, I recommend giving us a call as soon as possible. I have mixed feelings about the first day of school coming up so rapidly. On one hand, I may shed on little (but still manly) tear at the death of the summer. On the other hand, I am tired of only seeing my school friends on Facebook. It would be nice to catch up and speak to someone face to face. I am also excited to make new friends. We are a small school, but I make new friends every semester, and I am pretty sure this one will be no different.

Attention 2011 Seniors!
Attention 2011 Seniors! Your final year of high school is almost here!
I hope that you have enjoyed your summer, but are now beginning to think about switching gears and getting back in the classroom. It might seem like graduation is still a long time away but this year will go by fast and it is time to really take college planning seriously. Believe it or not, students who are going into their senior year are able to be accepted for admission now! We encourage students to apply for admission now in order to start receiving information for accepted students. Remember, applying and being accepted for admission, accepting scholarships, receiving a residence hall assignment, and even registering for classes does not ever commit you to a school. So it is important to apply to the schools you are interested in early so that you can complete other important materials such as scholarship applications.
You can find the application for admission online at www.bhsu.edu/apply or we can also drop one in the mail for you. Just have your high school send us your high school transcript and we can process your application. It is as easy as that.
Do not worry if any of this sounds confusing or hard to believe, we know it can be a lot to think about. So make it easy on yourself and give us a call or shoot us an email. That way we can talk about your questions and concerns and make sure that you have all the information you need. You can also think about scheduling a campus visit as well. Classes Begin August 30!
Greetings from the Black Hills!
I hope you are enjoying your summer, but it is quickly coming to an end. Classes begin on August 30th so it is time to begin thinking about any last minute details for fall. If you are still considering attending, now is the time to decide. Classes are filling up so you will want to complete your application for admission right away and get us the appropriate materials.
If you have already applied and been accepted, you will need to register for your courses. You can sign up for a registration session on August 20th at www.bhsu.edu/nsr by selecting either the New Freshman Registration or Transfer Student Registration link. In order to register for classes, you must attend one of the registration sessions on August 20th or General Registration on August 30th. Please feel free to call or email with specific questions.
It is important to contact us if you have questions because the fall semester is approaching quickly. There can be other important things to consider such as housing and financial aid and we would be happy to help you as you sort out the details. I hope to see you all around campus in the fall! Go Jackets!

Summer View
I hope that everyone is having a fantastic summer. I personally can't believe that it is almost the end of July... where has the summer gone?
Staff in the Office of Admissions at BHSU are starting to get depressed about the fact that summer is fading away fast. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as Summer View is next week!
At Summer View, which will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010, you will meet BHSU students, tour campus, talk to professors, and learn more about our academic programs, admission requirements, and financial aid. Sounds great, right? If you haven't visited campus yet, or are wanting to take a second look, Summer View is just the time to do it. Check-in will begin at 9:30 am, and the day will conclude around 1:30 pm.

Wow~ summer is DEFINITELY here! Temps today in Spearfish are in the upper 80s to low 90s. What a beautiful day! All of this sunshine is getting the admissions office excited about the summer events yet to come.
On July 9, we will hold our 4th New Student Registration session, with an option to come for either the 8:00 am morning session, or the 1:00 pm afternoon session. If you are a newly accepted student for the fall 2010 semester and have not yet signed up for classes, please register for one of these sessions today! You can do so at www.bhsu.edu/nsr or by calling the Office of Admissions at 605.642.6343.
We will also be holding Summer View on July 30th from roughly 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. At Summer View, you will have the opportunity to meet BHSU students, tour campus, talk to professors, and learn more about our academic programs, admission requirements, and financial aid. This is a great way to learn more about BHSU to help determine if it may be a good fit for you or not. To register for this event, please go to www.bhsu.edu/summerview, or call the Office of Admissions at the number listed above.
The Office of Admissions is also taking personal campus visit appointments daily, Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
