Paying for College 101

Perhaps some of the most popular questions we are asked as Admissions Counselors are concerns with tuition costs and how to pay for college. As many of us counselors have been through the process ourselves, we know how important the answers to these questions are, and that’s why we strive to make sure to make our scholarship and financial aid process as simple as possible.

If you have not checked out our scholarships application yet, you need to be aware that our priority date is February 1st and fast approaching! Do not worry, you still have time to get the application filled out and submitted to us this week. It’s simple. Click on our Pay for College link and click on Scholarships. Here you will find information on all of our foundation scholarships.
Make sure you pay attention to the outside scholarships that are posted on this web page as well. These scholarships have a separate application and change periodically based on information that is submitted to the university.

Not seeing anything that looks helpful or interesting to you? I recommend checking out www.FastWeb.com for even MORE information on scholarships.

Along with scholarships, FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid will be the biggest help when it comes to paying for college. Take a minute with your parent or legal guardian and make sure you have all of your necessary 2010 tax information collected and that you have created your login and pin information. The BHSU FAFSA priority date is March 1st, so the sooner you can submit your information, the better your chances are for collecting grants, scholarships and other financial assistance that may never have to be paid back. If you have questions with this process, please never hesitate to give our office a call at 605-642-6343!
So… remember to get that information submitted soon! Scholarship deadline is February 1st!

Overview of BHSU Residence Halls

It's that time of year again, as housing contracts are being sent out today and into early next week to Fall 2011 admitted students! You have all been waiting... and now the time is finally here! If you are currently an admitted student, you will be receiving your housing contract sometime next week. If you do become an admitted student in the future, you will receive your housing contract at that time.

A popular question that the Office of Admissions often gets asked is, "What residence hall is the best?" or "What residence hall should I live in?" These are both very hard questions to answer, as all of the five residence halls have a little different "flair" to them, and different people like different things. Therefore, I am going to try all give you all an overview of each of the five residence halls in this blog. After you read it, I hope you will have a better understanding of which residence hall is best for you!

1) Heidepriem Hall: Heidepriem Hall, or "Heide" as it is commonly known, is the largest residence hall on the BHSU campus with availability for 154 residents. Heide holds many amenities such as the cooking area on the second floor, and the TV lounge and ping-pong table on the first floor. Both places are perfect for spending time with friends. Heide is comprised of 2 male wings and 4 female wings, all of which conveniently house their own washer and dryers. Living in Heide will also give you easy access to the Disc Golf course, the large campus green, and beautiful scenery. Whatever your interests are, there is a place for you in Heide.
The furniture measurements for each room in Heide Hall are as follows:
*3 Drawer Dresser- 37" x 30"
*Closet w/ Overhead Storage- 34" x 65"
*Twin Bed (extra long sheets)- 79" long
*Window (for curtains)- 45" x 56"

2) Thomas Hall, or "T-Hall" as it is commonly known as, is one of the larger residence halls on campus with capacity for 152 residents. Thomas Hall is a great hall that can make any student feel comfortable because of the large recreation lounge, study lounge, and TV/movie lounge. Like in Heide Hall, a Thomas Hall residence room comes equipped with two 3 drawer dressers, two closets with overhead storage, a sink, two extra long twin beds, a long shared desk, and two wooden desk chairs.
The furniture measurements for each room in T-Hall are as follows:

3) According to its residents, Pangburn Hall is one of BHSU's best kept secrets. This hall is comprised of only 78 residents and provides a great mix of both first year and upper-class students. The centralized location of Pangburn Hall can’t be beat as it is located directly across the street from the library, the Student Union, and classroom buildings. Residence Life Livin’ at Black Hills State

Perhaps one of the biggest transitions to college life is your living situation. Come fall, you will all be saying goodbye to your bedroom and trading it in for a residence hall room. Though saying goodbye to your home can be a difficult task, the excitement and new friends that await you in your residence hall is well worth the adjustment. I promise!

Here at Black Hills State we have five residence halls, as well as apartment housing for students who are 19 years old or are in their second year of college. All of our residence halls are equipped with WiFi, flat screen TVs in the lobby areas, kitchenettes on some floors, mailboxes and all the essentials that make living away from home a little easier. Oh and did I mention the parking? Yes, all of our residence halls offer plenty of parking spaces for your convenience!

For all of you students who have already applied and have been accepted to the university, the admissions team will be sending out housing contracts very soon. As soon as you receive your contract in the mail, make sure to fill it out and send it back to us with your deposit ASAP. The sooner you hand in your housing contract, the sooner we will be able to assign you to your dream dorm room!

Take some time to read more about our dorms online or even take a virtual tour of campus and check out all we have to offer!

And the Countdown Begins…

What countdown am I speaking of you ask?

Well, if you’re currently a high school senior, you are most likely counting down the days until your last official day of high school. If you’re a transfer student, you might be counting down the days of your final semester at your current college, either way we are all beginning a new semester and in five short months (give or take) life is going to change dramatically, especially for all of you high school seniors. I know five months seems like a long time; however it will be here before we know it so get going on the important decisions you need to make NOW!
In order to help you with your college decisions, this week the BHSU Admissions team will be sounding a lot like your high school guidance counselor or perhaps your college academic advisor by encouraging you to start thinking about what happens next. We will be asking some important questions and providing you with the answers to make your application process simpler.

Simple is good, right? Here at BHSU we like to think so, that’s why we make our application process super easy!

So here we go with our first big question of the week…
How do I apply for admission at Black Hills State University?
Simple. I have one word for you, website! BHSU has a wonderful website and we like to think it’s a pretty user friendly one at that! In order to fill out your application, start by visiting www.bhsu.edu/admissions. Here you will find all of the information you need to begin the application process.

When it comes to filling out the actual application, you are welcome to submit the application online by filling it out here or you can simply print & mail your application by clicking here. Please note that we will need your $20.00 processing fee submitted with your application in order to process your application. Also, make sure you are filling out the appropriate application. If you are a high school senior, you will want to fill out the Freshman application. If you are transferring from another university or college, please click on the Transfer application. Don’t forget to send us your high school and/or college transcripts as well!

Well that was easy and we know you will think so too… so what are you waiting for? Get out there and fill out your application today and remember to stay tuned for more helpful Q&A!
