Attend BHSU! Explore the Outdoors!

Hello blog world! Can you believe that it's the end of April, and that May and more importantly SUMMER are right around the corner? Where has the beginning of 2011 gone? With the warmer weather approaching, I am getting very excited about the outdoor activities that are available living here in the beautiful Black Hills. There are so many opportunities for students at Black Hills State University to enjoy their surroundings that are both free (ALL college students love free stuff, right?!) and fun.

Black Hills State University is located in beautiful Spearfish, SD, the hub of the Northern Black Hills with a population of around 12,000. Located on I-90, 10 minutes from the Wyoming border, Spearfish is only 46 miles from Rapid City, 65 miles from Mount Rushmore National Memorial and is an hour drive from Devils Tower and the Badlands of South Dakota. Spearfish Canyon, one of the oldest and most scenic canyons in the west, is a local favorite for hiking, biking and sightseeing. A beautiful hike, or even a scenic drive is just a few miles away from campus, in beautiful Spearfish Canyon!

There are tons of other outdoor recreation opportunities around BHSU besides hiking in Spearfish Canyon, including rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, biking, fishing, and much more! What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon away from studying! Just another perk that BHSU has to offer :).

All of these outdoor activities are right around the corner, and I personally can't wait! See you in the beautiful Black Hills!

GO JACKETS!

Preview Day- April 16- THIS Saturday!

Hello to all. I hope that everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather that we have been getting because I know that I have- until today that is! This weather system is crazy! The weather is supposed to come around though, so everyone should come out to our Preview Day this Saturday April 16, 2011 as it will be our last one for this academic school year. I know for most it is hard making that tough decision on which college you should attend because it does change your life. Not too long ago I was in your shoes and the world just seemed to grow with all the different possibilities that you have out there. By attending a Preview Day you get to hear from the student’s perspective about campus along with the faculty and staff. Preview Day’s are a chance to explore and look at your options and it is the best way in my opinion. During the day of Preview Day you are very busy, but it is really fun. You start out by attending an Information Fair and this is a great thing because you get to talk to a lot of different people and learn so much about BHSU. There are several booths and it is a chance to make sure that BHSU is the University for you! After the information fair Beth Oaks, our Director of Admissions, will give the opening and then there will be an Academic Panel. This is where we have professors from the different colleges talk about what they do. This is always very interesting to listen to the professors side and maybe this will help you find a major if you have not chosen one yet. After the Academic Panel we have financial aid and they will do a presentation on filling out FAFSA and the different student loans possible. Then we will have a TOUR! This is always really fun because the tour guides are current students, like me, and they show you around campus and answer questions from the student’s perspective. This is really nice to get some one on one time with the students so ask the tour guides questions because that is what we are here for! Then we get to hear from the students again on the student panel. After that we have the Admissions portion left and they will talk about applying and scholarship opportunities. After the Admissions presentation we get to eat at the Hive, which is delicious and all you can eat! Then we will have optional residence hall tours. This is way awesome because you get to see where you want to live and the tour gives you a chance to actually picture yourself there. Also there will be a drawing for a $250.00 scholarship for someone that attends but you must be present to win!!! Preview Days are fun and exciting and this weekend is going to be gorgeous with the spring weather so it will even be better to come out and see the Black Hills and BHSU Campus!! My favorite part about Preview Day is that you get to talk to actual students who went through what you are going through and they help out so much and they will give you the honest truth . I hope to see everyone out on Saturday. It will be fun!! So if you want to attend a Preview Day go online to sign up on our website at www.bhsu.edu/previewday or you may call 605-642-6343 to sign up!! See you at Preview Day! Preview Day – Don’t miss it!

It’s hard to believe but our last Preview Day of the 2010-2011 academic year is fast approaching and believe me; you don’t want to miss it! Preview Day is an excellent event for anyone who is interested in attending Black Hills State University. Whether you are a current high school student, a college student thinking about transferring from another university or perhaps an adult learner who is thinking about going back to school to complete a degree – this event is the perfect way to get a “preview” of what it’s like to be a student at BHSU! During our Preview Days, prospective students have the opportunity of learning about our many academic programs (over 80 degrees to be exact) by touring our information fair and listening to current faculty members from our three colleges here on campus. Additionally, our Preview Day guests get to take a tour of campus, dine in our wonderful dining facility (The Hive) and learn all about the admissions and financial aid process. Not to mention, we actually have a panel of current BHSU students who tell their great stories about what their BHSU experience has been like, as well as share tips & advice! While touring campus, guests get to learn about each and every one of our buildings –everything from classrooms, laboratories, to our Student Union are viewed. As an added bonus, we also give an optional tour to those interested in seeing each of our five residence halls. That’s right; you don’t miss an inch of this place! Last but not least, we will be drawing for a $250.00 scholarship for one lucky member of the audience! So what are you waiting for? Sign up today for the LAST Preview Day of this academic year on Saturday, April 16 beginning at 8:30 A.M.! All you have to do is visit www.bhsu.edu/previewday or call 605-642-6343 to register! Hope to see you there! Oh and if you’re in the Torrington, WY area on Wednesday, April 13th, look for me, Anne, at Eastern Wyoming College from 10:00 A.M until 2:00 P.M during the Eastern Wyoming College Job Expo! University Center- Rapid City

Hello, and Happy Friday! I don't know about you, but I am extremely excited that the weekend is upon us! It has been a very busy week here in Rapid City, as we have been moving from the Higher Education Center into our new space at the brand new University Center- Rapid City (UCRC). The UCRC is located at 4300 Cheyenne Blvd just behind the WaTiki water park. We are very excited to have the Center completed, as students will now have the opportunity to take classes from Black Hills State, the University of South Dakota, and South Dakota State University all at one location in Rapid City! We offer 10 full degrees through BHSU right in Rapid City at the University Center. Most of the classes are held in the evening hours, either from 4-7 pm or 7-10 pm. For more information on our RC degree programs, and the RC campus as a whole, check out www.bhsu.edu/rapidcity. We will be back open for business at the UCRC on April 13th, so please feel free to come check out the new facility! Spring classes will be moved here from their current locations on April 18, and all summer & fall classes will be held here. If you are wanting to take classes through BHSU at the UCRC starting this summer or fall, there is still time to apply! All you need to do is go to www.bhsu.edu/apply to get started. New students are eligible to register for summer classes right now, and can register for fall classes starting April 18. Therefore, start the application process NOW so that you can create the class schedule that fits your needs. If you are accepted to BHSU, you can then contact Katie Pavel, BHSU Rapid City Academic Advisor, at 718-4117 to set up a registration appointment. Have a great weekend! It's a GREAT Time to Register for NSR!

The fall semester is approaching very fast and it might have crept up on you, I know it did for me, so if you’re wondering what to do now after you have been accepted to Black Hills State University the next step would be to attend a New Student Registration session. New Student Registration is this summer and to check out the session dates & times that are available for New Student Registration go to our website www.bhsu.edu/nsr. You can sign up for a session right on this website, or you can give the Office of Admissions a call to sign up for NSR at 605.642.6343. Some of you might be wondering what New Student Registration is. New Student Registration is a time that you come to campus and there are academic advisors that help you sign up for classes for your first year at BHSU! Also on this date you can get your Buzz Card (student ID) so do not forget to bring your drivers license or another picture ID so you can get that done! Also if you have turned in your housing contract prior to attending NSR you get to find out who your roommate is and you can even see your room!!! This day is busy but very fun and worthwhile! Along with signing up for New Student Registration make sure you get those immunization records in. We need these before you start attending Black Hills State University and the sooner you get them in the better so you do not have a chance to forgot about them and you can enjoy your summer. For all of those who still have not yet got a chance to apply you still have TIME! There is plenty of time to still apply for Black Hills State University for the fall semester. I know that your senior year can be a little hectic but the sooner you get that application in with the $20 application fee the better. As for the weather here in the Black Hills it is actually starting to feel like Spring! This is very exciting because there is not a lot of snow left, just a little up in the hills. It has been in the 50’s and yesterday we got rain and that is way more exciting than snow. Next week it is supposed to be up to 55 degrees so it would be a great time to come and get a tour of campus if you have not yet had one. Well I hope that everyone is as excited as I am for this fall semester and I hope to see you around campus either for a tour or during New Student Registration!!!!
